CHICAGO – From the 28th Annual Cubs Convention, the Chicago Cubs today announced 11 high school seniors of the Chicago Cubs RBI program have been offered college scholarships to play baseball.
The Chicago Cubs RBI program is run through the Union League Boys and Girls Clubs in Chicago and supported through a grant from Cubs Care, a McCormick Foundation Fund. Cubs Care provides $100,000 to fund the entire program. The program provides nearly 300 inner city youth the opportunity to play ball and participate in weekend tournaments.
“We're thrilled to honor this group of extraordinary men and their accomplishments as they further their academic and baseball careers,” said Mike Lufrano, Chicago Cubs executive vice president community affairs. “Chicago Cubs Charities is committed to expanding the reach of baseball while advancing educational opportunities.”
“The Union League Boys & Girls Clubs RBI (reviving baseball in the inner cities) program is all about teamwork and opportunity. Our RBI program allows more than 300 Chicago youth to play summer and fall ball in a safe and encouraging environment. Through our Boys & Girls Clubs Formula for Impact, we also encourage academic success, teach the importance of living a healthy lifestyle and the values of good character and citizenship,” said Mary Ann Mahon-Huels, executive director.
