Most players don't arrive at Claflin University as high-profile prospects on Major League Baseball scouts' radars. The hope is that through a couple of years of hard work with an up-and-coming team – Claflin finished second in division play last season – the players can turn themselves into hot commodities.

This year's crop of Panther baseball players took a step in that direction Friday afternoon, when the team held its annual MLB Scout Day in Orangeburg. More than a dozen professional scouts made their way to historic Mirmow Field to take a look at what the Claflin and Voorhees College teams have to offer.

"Any time you can get Major League Baseball scouts to visit your campus, it is a great mental boost for your kids – and a major recruiting tool," Claflin's Head Baseball Coach James Randall said.

One Panther currently working on a direct path from Claflin to professional baseball is centerfielder Sixto Guerrero. Last season, Guerrero was awarded both SIAC and Claflin baseball's Freshman of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Timothy J. Autry All-Academic Team Golden Scholar honors.

Guerrero, however, isn't draft eligible until the end of his junior season. While he has shown major improvement since last year and the scouts were fairly impressed, Guerrero has been challenged to improve his speed on the field.
