Panthers Fall to Spartans late in Game 70-75

Box Score Claflin University's (3-5)Montel Williams' game high 26 points wasn't enough as the University of North Carolina Greensboro(5-5) handed the Panthers a 75-70 defeat at the Greensboro Coliseum, Wednesday afternoon.

UNC-Greensboro used a strong inside game in the first half scoring 24 points in the paint, while Claflin could only muster six, as UNC-Greenville took a 14 point advantage at the break 38-24.

Claflin was not out of the game by a long shot, cutting the lead down to just two points (49-47), with 12:04 in the second half,  on an old fashion three point play, a basket and a free throw by Marcellus Dun, who scored 16 points for the Panthers.  UNC-G pushed its lead to eight points halfway through the period 57-49 with an 8-2 run.  Claflin closed the gap to four points on a 3 point basket by Williams as the score stood 58-54, with 7:44 remaining.  Within 1:30 the Spartans increased its lead to nine points 65-56 with a 7-2 run, with 6:05 on the game clock.

The Panthers had one last run in them going on a 14-6 run, getting to within one point 71-70 with 1:31 left.  But the Spartans made four out of four free throws in the last minute that provided the margin of victory for the Spartans 75-70.

Kayel Locke led the Spartans in the scoring department with 25 pints, as Nicholas Paulos chipped in 14 points, and Tevon Saddler added 10 points,

Following Williams and Dunn, Joseph Pellegrino tallied 11 points for the Panthers.

The Panthers will remain on the road for the holidays traveling to Barry University, in Miami, FL on December 17th and Rollins College, in Winter Park, FL December 19th, before beginning their SIAC schedule January 2, 2014 at Miles College.
