Claflin Softball Completes Season Sweep of Benedict College

Orangeburg, S.C.—The Claflin University softball team completed the season sweep of Benedict College, defeating the Tigers 11-3 and 9-5 in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) doubleheader in Orangeburg.  With the wins, the Panthers improves to 36-5 overall and 18-2 in the SIAC.  The Tigers dropped to 19-17 and 10-11 in the SIAC.
 
In Game One of the doubleheader Claflin put up 11 runs off 11 hits with just one error to capture the 11-3 win.  Chelsea Hall, who went 2-for-4 with three runs, hit her 13th homerun of the season.  Hall also recorded two RBI's in the win.  Erin Lipps scored two runs and Kayla Sanderson had two hits with two RBI's in the contest.  Lipps picked up her 15th win of the season.
 
Claflin and Benedict exchanged leads at the start of Game Two.  The Panthers enjoyed the first lead, putting up one run in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead.  The Tigers came back in the top of the second to put up two runs to take the 1-2 lead.  The Panthers offense responded quickly, putting up two runs of its own to regain the 3-2 advantage in their half of the second.  A two-run homerun by the Tigers Sabriya Brooks in the top of the third allowed Benedict to regain the lead, 3-4, heading into the middle of the third.  Claflin scored five runs off three hits, including a three-run homerun by Alice Boone, and two Tiger errors to take the 9-4 lead in the bottom of the fourth.  The Panthers would never relinquish its lead as they went on to pick up the 9-5 Game Two win and secure the season sweep of Benedict.
 
In addition to her homerun, Boone also added a double, two runs and 3 RBI's to her line.  Daisza Daniel and Arielle Hayes had two runs each and Amanda Evans, who went the entire seven innings to pick up the win in Game Two.
 
Claflin will host Fayetteville State University this Saturday, Apr. 5 in a non-conference doubleheader.  First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at the Adden Street Park.  Saturday's contest will also be community day for the Lady Panthers.
 
Game Note:  Claflin Department of Athletics celebrated Student Athlete Day during today's doubleheader.  81 total student-athletes (including six from Benedict) were recognized during a ceremony between Games One and Two of the doubleheader for achieving a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average along with various community service activities.
