Lady Panthers Holds Annual StrikeOut for Cancer Game

Orangeburg, S.C.—The Claflin University softball team will host Benedict College in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) doubleheader, tomorrow, Thursday, Apr. 10.  First pitch is set for 4 p.m. at the Adden Street Park in Orangeburg.  The game is also designated as the StrikeOut for Cancer Game, an initiative in conjunction with the NCAA.  Fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of the initiative.
 
Claflin enters the game atop the SIAC East Division with an overall record of 34-5 and 16-2 in the SIAC.  Markea Sheppard currently leads the Lady Panthers with a .513 batting average.  Sheppard has recorded 59 hits with 50 runs, including seven homeruns, and 52 RBI's.  Amanda Evans, Erin Lipps and Chelsea Hall are all averaging .400 or above.  Evans is batting .481, Lipps .417 and Hall right at .400.  On the mound, Lipps leads the staff with a 14-4 win-loss record.  Evans has a 2.73 ERA in 12 appearances and Helen Keevy is undefeated at 13-0.
 
Benedict comes into the contest with a 19-5 overall record and 10-9 in the SIAC.  The Tigers are led by Sabriya Brooks with a .508 batting averaging.  Jasmine Sledge is batting .450 and has 45 hits with 32 runs on the season.
 
As a part of the StrikeOut for Cancer Initiative, the Lady Panthers will have an honorary coach in the dugout and will have a squat challenge.  The Claflin players will do 10 squats for every strikeout during the game.
