Claflin Men’s Basketball Falls to Fayetteville State in Non-Conference Contest

Fayetteville, N.C.—Patrell Rogers dropped in a game-high 27 points as the Claflin University men's basketball team dropped its first game of the season falling to Fayetteville State, 72-77, in a non-conference game at Capel Arena.  With the loss the Panthers fall to 2-1. 
 
The Panthers has four players to finish in double-digits as Adolph Caldwell finished with 13 points and Brian Townsend and Elijah Bradley dropped in 11 points apiece.  Caldwell also led the team in rebounding with seven.
 
Fayetteville State was led by Joshua Dawson, who recorded a double-double, 18 points-11 assists.  Isaiah Vinson scored 16 points, including 4-of-5 from behind arc for the Broncos in the win.  William Tibbs pulled in six rebounds for Fayetteville State, who improved to 3-2 on the season.
 
Down by three at intermission, Fayetteville State opened the second half on a 7-4 run over the first three-plus minutes to tie the game at 39-39 with 17:13 remaining in the contest.  The teams exchanged the lead over the next five minutes before the Broncos regained the momentum, managing to push its lead to seven, 53-46, with just under 12 minutes remaining. The Panthers remained poised, using a 7-0 run of its home to tie the game for the seventh time at 53-53 at the 9:24 mark.  After baskets over the next 12 points, a three pointer by the Broncos Jyonté Raynor gave them the 62-59 lead.  The Panthers managed to tie the game once more at 66-66 but Fayetteville State would close the game on an 11-6 run over the last 3:41 en route to the five point victory.
 
The Broncos opened the game much like the second half, on a 7-3 run to take a 3-10 lead.  The Panthers put together a 9-2 run of their home to tie the game for the first time 12-12 with 12:15 left in the half.  After a made free-throw by Fayetteville State Carl McCray broke the tie and gave the Broncos the one point lead, 12-13, but that was short-lived.  A layup by Claflin's Brian Townsend put the Panthers up by one, 14-13 with just under 11 minutes remaining.  Claflin would maintain the lead for the remainder of the half, enjoying the three point lead at the half, 32-35.
 
Claflin will remain on the road this weekend, Friday-Saturday, Nov. 27-28, when they travel to St. Petersburg, Fla. to participate in the Eckerd College Tournament. The Panthers will face the University of Tampa on Friday at 5:30 and host Eckerd College on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
