Claflin Men’s Basketball Opens SIAC Play with a Loss to Lane

Jackson, Tenn.--The Claflin University men's basketball team dropped its opening game of the 2015-16 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Season (SIAC), falling to Lane College, 56-51, in Jackson, Tenn. With the loss, the Panthers fall to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the SIAC.

Adolph Caldwell led Claflin with 10 points and six rebounds. Patrell Rogers dropped in nine points while Austin Lawton had seven points-nine rebounds. Brian Townsend had eight points for the Panthers.

Lane opened the second half on a 6-2 run to increase its lead to six, 33-27, but Claflin was not done. The Panthers picked up its offensive intensity, using an 8-0 run of its own which was culminated by a three-pointer by Patrell Rogers to give Claflin its first lead since 9-6 in the first half, 35-33, with 12:50 remaining in the contest. The Dragons offensive came back to life, as they used a 12-1 run to regain the lead, 45-36, with just over eight minutes remaining. Claflin managed to pull within five late, but could not get any closer falling by the five point margin.

Adolph Caldwell hit a three-pointer at the 17:42 mark to open the scoring in the game. The Panthers managed to push its lead 5-2 before Lane offensive intensity picked up. The Dragons used a 6-4 run to cut the lead to one 9-8. Lane maintained the momentum minutes pushing its lead to six, 16-10. Claflin chipped away at the lead using a 7-1 run over the next three minutes to cut the lead to one, 18-17, with 5:05 remaining the in the half. The Dragons enjoyed 27-24 lead at intermission.

Lane was led by Kedarius Ash with 12 points-nine rebounds. Joseph Cooper had nine points for Lane who improved to 1-4 overall and 1-0 in the SIAC.

The Panthers will face conference foe Kentucky State Saturday, Dec. 5 at 3:00 p.m. in Frankfort, Ky. and will close-out their road swing in Wilberforce, Ohio on Monday, Dec. 7 at Central State University in a SIAC match-up.
