Claflin Closeout its 2014-15 Regular Season with a Win over Benedict

Columbia, S.C.—The Claflin University men's basketball team closed out its 2014-15 regular season with a win over Benedict.  With the win, the Panthers finished the 2014-15 season with a 15-9 overall record and 13-5 record in the SIAC.

Benedict falls to 14-9 overall and  12-6 in the SIAC.

Kendall Jackson led five Panther players in double-figures with a game-high 21 points.  Patrell Rogers scored 15, Montel William added eight while Ryan McNeill-Moses and Fare'al Walker each contributed 10 in the win.  Walker led all rebounders with a game-high seven.

Benedict was led by Andrew Crawford with 19 points.  Deonte Johnson came off the bench to score 14 points with a team-high six rebounds.

Neither team could gain the moment to start the second half, exchanging the lead over the first six-plus minutes.  Claflin went on an 8-2 run over a two minute span to gain to take the biggest lead of the game by either team, six points, 50-44, with 12:11 remaining in the game.  After a layup by Roberto Mantovani, senior Williams scored five straight points, a three-pointer and a 18 footer, to give the Panthers a nine point lead, 55-46.  The Panthers continued to hustle throughout the half, increasing their lead to 13, 60-47, with just over nine minutes remaining in the contest.  Claflin pushed its lead to 25, 80-55, late en route to the 82-58 victory and season sweep of the Tigers for the first time in over 10 years.

"We played our game tonight and it worked for us," head coach Ricky Jackson said.  "The win put us in a good position heading into the SIAC Tournament.  With Benedict and Morehouse each having at least one conference game remaining, we just have to sit and wait to see where we will end up."

The teams exchanged the lead over the course of the first half with neither team owning more than a three-point advantage.  The half also saw six ties with the final one coming at the 2:14 mark, 30-30.  After a three-pointer by Andrew Crawford gave the Tigers a three-point lead with 1:59 remaining, Fare'al Walker scored the Panthers next four points, two free-throws and a layup at the buzzer to give Claflin the one point advantage at the half, 34-33.

The Panthers will have 10 days off from competition before heading to Birmingham, Ala. to participate in the 2015 SIAC post-season tournament the week of March 2-7.
