Claflin Falls to Lane in Quarterfinal of the 2015 SIAC Men’s Basketball Tournament

Birmingham, Ala.—The Claflin University men's basketball team fell to Lane College by three, 59-62, in the quarterfinal round of the 2015 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Men's Basketball Tournament.  The tournament, which is being played at the Bill Harris Arena in the Birmingham Crossplex in Birmingham, Ala., had to be extended to Sunday, March 8 due to the postponement of Thursday's games.

The Panthers closed out the 2014-15 season with a 16-14 record, which is a six game improvement from a year ago.

Sophomore Patrell Rogers scored 19 points to lead Claflin.  Senior Kendall Jackson was the only other Panther to score in double-figures as he came off the bench to score 14 in his final collegiate game.  Sophomore Ryan McNeill-Moses scored six points with nine rebounds and senior Fare'al Walker pulled in nine rebounds off the bench.

Lane was led in scoring by Donald Stewart who scored 20 of his game-high 30 points in the first half.  Terrance Bridgeman scored 14 points and Joseph Cooper pulled in a game-high 11 rebounds for the Dragons.

"I would like to first congratulate Lane, they did a good job this afternoon and I wish them luck the rest of the way," head coach Ricky Jackson said.  "I'm proud of my guys, we didn't play our best game today but we didn't play or worse either.  We had opportunities down the stretch, just couldn't get over the hump.  I also want to say that I'm proud of the seniors, they played well today."

After playing to a 38-38 at the 11:19 mark of the second half, a traditional three-point play by Lane's Terrance Bridgeman gave the Dragons a three-point advantage, 38-41 with 8:48 remaining the ball game.  The Panthers battled back to take a one-point, 42-41, but Rodney Clark hit a three-pointer less than one minute later to put the Dragons back up by two, 42-44 with 6:15 left.  The Dragons increased its lead to six, 44-50, with just over three minutes left in the contest.  Kendall Jackson completed an old-fashion three-pointer of his own to cut the deficit to three, 48-50, at the 2:13 mark.  The Panthers pulled within two twice before falling by the four point margin.

Claflin began the first half a little sluggish but picked up its offense midway thru the half.  A jumper by Patrell Rogers at the 4:44 mark capped off a 13-5 run which tied the game at 21-21.  A steal and layup by Ryan McNeill-Moses 44 seconds later give the Panthers their first lead of the half, 23-21.  Claflin led by as many as four, 25-21, before enjoying the one-point lead at the half, 27-26.
