Claflin Panthers Outlast Lane in SIAC Overtime Contest

Orangeburg, S.C.--Ryan McNeill-Moses scored four of his 13 points in overtime as Claflin University held off Lane College, 83-81, in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball contest Saturday at the Tullis Arena.
 
With the extra period win, Claflin improved to 4-3 on the season and 2-1 in the conference.
 
It was McNeill-Moses that broke a 78-78 tie in overtime, putting the Panthers ahead for good 80-78 with 1:33 left.
 
Claflin increased its lead to four, 83-79, with 39 seconds left off a free throw from Austin Lawton and a Triston Thompson's layup.
 
Lane made the game close at the end as Kendarius Ash hit two free throws with 1.2 seconds left to cut the Panthers led to 83-81.
 
Claflin, which outscored Lane 10-8 in overtime, was able to inbound the basketball to secure the win.
 
"Lane is a very good team with the preseason SIAC Player of the Year [Terrence Bridgeman]," said head coach Ricky Jackson.  "The team demonstrated why they were picked to finish first on their side of the conference.  We were blessed to close out this one with the win."
 
In regulation, the Dragons trailed by 12 points midway in the second half, 65-53.  Lane continued to chip away at Claflin lead over the remainder of the half.  Ash connected on two free throws with 44 seconds left to knot the game at 73-all.
The Panthers had a chance to win the ballgame in regulation, but a Tyler Thompson three-pointer was off the mark as time expired.
 
Lawton and Benjamin "Tre" Williams led Claflin in scoring with 15 points each. Lawton also pulled down 11 rebounds and recorded seven blocked shots.
 
Trevor Dantzler came off the bench to score 14 points, while Triston Thompson added eight points and eight assists. Awwal Reid also scored eight points.
 
Lane, 3-4 overall and 0-1 in the league play, was led by Maurice Alexander with 18 points and Montez Williams added 16. Ash added 14 points and a game-high 19 rebounds.
 
In the first half, the lead shifted hands several times before Lawton gave the Panthers a 27-26 on a jumper at the 6:52 mark.
 
After Lawton's basket, Claflin erupted for seven straight points for a 34-26 advantages with 4:07 showing on the clock.
 
A free-throw by Terrance Bridgeman stopped the Claflin run.
 
Reid then scored six straight points for Claflin, giving the Panthers their biggest margin of the first half at 40-27 with 1:05 left.
 
Lane scored the last four points of the period to trail 40-21 at intermission.
 
Claflin will return to action Saturday (Dec. 10th) in a rematch with Saint Augustine's University in Raleigh, N.C.
