Claflin Falls to Benedict in SIAC Men’s Basketball Contest

Orangeburg, S.C.—De'shon Nails came off the bench to score a game-high 20 points as the Claflin University men's basketball team fell to Benedict College by six, 68-62, in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) contest in Columbia.  With the loss, the Panthers drops to 12-12 overall and 8-8 in the SIAC.
 
Claflin scored the first eight points to start the second half and take the 34-28 with 18:11 remaining in the game.  The Panthers pushed its lead to six, 36-30, before Benedict picked up its offensive aggression.  The Tigers used an 8-0 run of their own to take the 38-36 lead with 13:34 remaining in the contest.  Benedict pushed its lead to five, 50-45, but Claflin remained poised.  Nails scored five straight points, a jumper followed by a three-pointer, to knot the game at 50-all with 7:35 remaining.  Triston Thompson hit one of two free-throws to give the Panthers a one point advantage at the seven minute mark.
 
After exchanging baskets over the next five points, Benedict gained the momentum and kept pressing.  The Tigers scored eight points in a three-minute span to take an eight point lead, 61-53, with 2:58 remaining.  Claflin kept fighting cutting the deficit to two, 61-59, with just over a minute remaining but could not get any closer, eventually falling by the six point margin.
 
Benedict scored the first two points of the game and pushed its lead to 11, 15-4, midway thru the first half.  Claflin's offense came to life over the next three minutes.  The Panthers went on a 7-1 run during the span to cut the deficit to five, 16-11, with 8:27 remaining in the half.  Claflin kept pressing pulling to within one, 23-22, with 2:34 remaining in the half.  The teams exchanged baskets over the final two-plus minutes of the half, with the Tigers owning a two point lead at intermission, 28-26.
 
Patrell Rogers was the only other Claflin player to score in double-figures with 13.  Austin Lawton led the Panthers on the boards with seven.
 
Quiron Cooke led four Benedict Players in double-figures with 18.  Brenna Reynard scored 11 and Jordan Smith Quayshun Hawkins scored 10 apiece in the win.  Elan Dejourdan pulled in five rebounds to lead the Tigers, who improved to 16-9 overall and 11-5 in the SIAC.
 
Claflin will host Morehouse in a SIAC matchup, Thursday, Feb. 18.  Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. in Tullis Arena.
