Claflin Softball Splits with Bloomfield College at Cocoa Beach Spring Break Tournament

Cocoa Beach, Fla.—The Claflin University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Bloomfield College, dropping Game One 6-0 and Winning Game Two 4-2, on opening day of the Cocoa Beach Spring Break Tournament.
 
The split puts the Lady Panthers overall record at 10-11 on the season.
 
Jasmine Squirewell had two of the Claflin four hits in Game One.  Kayla Cato paced the Lady Panthers in Game Two with two runs off two hits with one RBI.  LaKaylin Lee also knocked out two hits in the win.  Darnesha Sampson recorded one hit with two RBI's in the Game Two win.
 
Bloomfield put up two runs in the top of the first to start the scoring for Game Two.  A two-out single by Shaquailla German to score Chelsea Hall in the bottom of the first cut the deficit to one.  The score remained 2-1 over the next one-and-a half inning before a homerun by Kayla Cato to lead off the fourth tied the game at 2-all heading into the top of the fifth.
 
After neither team scored in the fifth, the Lady Panthers defense held strong, forcing the Bears into a three-up-three-down sixth inning.  A single by Cato followed by a walk by Courtney Burns with one out afforded the Lady Panthers runners on first and second in its half of the sixth. A two out two RBI single through the left side by Sampson snapped the 2-all tie to give Claflin the 4-2 lead heading into the seventh.  The Lady Panthers held the Bears scoreless in the seventh en route to the 4-2 Game Two victory.
 
Bloomfield scored one run in the bottom of the third to take the 1-0 lead in Game One of the doubleheader.  Neither team scored in the fourth but the Bears scored four-of-its six runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-1.  Bloomfield would put up one more run in the bottom of the six en route to the 6-0 win.
 
Tiaria Norman was the losing pitcher of in Game One while Shaquailla German picked up the complete game win in Game Two.
 
The Lady Panthers will face Judson University tomorrow, Tuesday, March 8 in a non-conference doubleheader on Day two of the tournament.  First pitch for game one is set for 3 p.m.
