Charles Leads Claflin to Ninth Straight Win

Orangeburg, S.C. -- Jaleel Charles posted a double-double, 23 points and 10 rebounds, as the Claflin University men's basketball team ran their consecutive win streak to nine games, defeating St. Augustine's University 83-75 Saturday at the Tullis Arena.
 
Claflin improved to 10-1 on the season, while St. Augustine's dropped to 2-7.
 
The contest also marked the second straight game Charles has scored 20-plus points. He scored 29 points in the Panthers 76-73 win over Winston-Salem State University last week. Charles also added three blocked shots and three steals in the game.
 
Two other players scored in double-figures for Claflin, Triston Thompson with 15 points and Benjamin "Tre" Williams added 14 points.
 
St. Augustine's was led by Tyre Gathright with 22 points followed by Quincy January with 13 points and nine rebounds.
 
Both teams shot well from the field for the game as the Panthers connected on 59.5% (25-of-42) and the Falcons shot 50% (27-of-54).
 
In the second half, the Claflin offense increased a seven-point halftime lead to 15 points at 60-45 with 10:41 left, by outscoring the Falcons 18-10. Williams and Timothy Christian II connected on back-to-back three-pointers during the run.
 
Over the final 10 minutes, St. Augustine's made the game close, pulling to within 75-71 with 50 seconds left on a basket by Gathright. The basket capped off a 26-15 run by the Falcons.
 
Claflin secured the victory by outscoring St. Augustine's 8-4 in the closing seconds.
 
In the first 10 minutes of the opening half, it was the Charles and Gathright show. The two led their respective teams in scoring during that period as Charles poured in 14 points for Claflin and Gathright added eight to lead St. Augustine's.
 
It was Charles that scored eight straight points for the Panthers following a basket by "Tre" Williams to start the game. The contest was tied with 14:03 showing on the clock.
 
Gathright later gave St. Augustine's its last lead of the game at 14-12, scoring on basket at the 13:13 mark.
 
The Panthers responded with a 13-3 run spearheaded by Charles, who scored six of the 13 points. Triston Thompson added four points during the run, giving Claflin a 25-17 lead with 9:11 left in the half.
 
St. Augustine's outscored Claflin 18-17 the rest of the half, but still trailed 42-35 at the intermission.
Charles led all scorers in the first half with 16 points and five rebounds, while Gathright tallied nine points to lead St. Augustine's.
 
Claflin will travel to Gaffney, S.C. on Wednesday (Dec. 14) to take Limestone in an NCAA Division II non-conference game. The contest is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.at the Timken Center on the Limestone campus.
