Claflin Holds Off Late Game Threat by Tuskegee to Advance in the 2017 SIAC Softball Championships

Hephzibah, Ga.—The Claflin University softball team held off a late game threat by Tuskegee en route to defeating the Lady Tigers, 3-2, in their opening game of the 2017 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Championships.
 
The Championships, which run through Saturday (May 6), are being contested at Diamond Lakes Regional Park in Hephzibah, Ga.
 
With the win, Claflin (30-14) advances to face Clark Atlanta, tomorrow, Friday, May 4 at 12 noon.  Tuskegee (3-30) drops to the loser bracket and will face Kentucky State in the elimination game Friday at 10 a.m.
 
Kayla Cato paced Claflin in the win with one run, one hit and a RBI.  Shaquailla German, who went 5.1 innings on the mound, added one run and a RBI while Chelsea Hall contributed two hits, including a triple in the top of the first, and one run.
 
Tiaria Norman entered in relief to pitch one and two-third innings to pick up the win.
 
Tuskegee was led by Tamia O'Neal with one run a hit and a RBI.  Acey Spence was the losing pitcher or record.
 
Claflin jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead by the bottom of the first. 
 
The Lady Panthers maintained the two run advantage until the top of the fifth. 
 
With one out in the top of the fifth, Tuskegee placed its next three runners on the base pads via two singles and a hit by pitch.
 
Jasmine Snyder hit a RBI single to centerfield to score O'Neal for the Lady Tigers first run of the game.
