Claflin Falls to Morehouse in SIAC East Division Matchup

Atlanta, Ga. -- The Claflin University men's basketball team saw their 16-game winning streak ended Saturday (Jan. 20) at the hands of Morehouse College, falling 86-75 in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) East Division basketball contest.
 
The loss, Claflin's first since losing to the University Montevallo 61-52 in the second game of the season, dropped the Panthers to 17-2 on the season. The road defeat also knocked Claflin out of a first-place tie in the division with Morehouse and Clarke Atlanta University at 10-1.  Clark Atlanta defeated Benedict Saturday to remain undefeated.
 
Morehouse remains perfect on the season with the win, improving to 16-0 and 11-0 in the SIAC.
 
The Panthers will wrap up their two-game road trip Monday (Jan. 22) against Clark Atlanta at the L.S. Epps Gymnasium. Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m. and will follow the women's game, which starts at 6 p.m.
 
Austin Lawton and Benjamin "Tre" Williams led Claflin in the losing effort with 14 points each. Lawton also had four rebounds and three blocked shots before fouling out in the second half.
 
Jaleel Charles, who had 10 points in the first half for the Panthers, finished the game with 12 points. Charles played only 14 minutes in the game as the result of four fouls.
 
Albert "Trey" Miller came off the bench to score eight points for Claflin, including a pair of three-point baskets and Tondric Johnson added seven points.
 
The Panthers also received a solid performance Triston Thompson who finished with seven rebounds, five assists and two steals. Timothy Christian, II had seven rebounds.
 
Tyrius Walker of Morehouse led all scorers with 29 points followed by Martravious Little at 20 points.
 
Morehouse, which entered the game as the league's top scoring team, shot 52.8% (28-of-53) from the field as compared to Claflin at 49.2% (30-of-61).
 
The Maroon Tigers also used the free throw line as one of their offensive weapons, connecting on 22-of-31 to go with eight three-pointers.
 
The Panthers were just 5-of-14 from three-point range and 10-of-20 at the charity stripe.
 
The Maroon Tigers defense forced 18 Claflin turnovers that resulted into 23 points.
 
After trailing 36-33 at the half, Williams hit a jumper to start the second half for Claflin, pulling the Panthers to within one, 36-35, at 19:27 mark. That would be the closest Claflin would get.
 
The Maroon Tigers erupted for a 24-6 run over the next 8:13 for a commanding 60-41 lead with 11:14 left.
 
Claflin did manage to outscore Morehouse 34-26 over the last 10 minutes of the game.
 
In the first half, the Panthers held a brief 2-0 lead as Charles scored the game's first points. Morehouse responded with a three-pointer from Walker and held the lead the rest of the way.
 
Claflin pulled within a bucket at 32-30 on a layup by Williams at the 2:40 mark but Morehouse connected on four straight free-throws to take a 36-30 advantage with 43 seconds remaining in the half.
 
The Panthers ended the first half trailing by three points at 36-33, thanks to a three-pointer from Williams with 15 seconds left.
