Claflin Collects Homecoming Win Over Tuskegee

Orangeburg, S.C. – The Claflin University men's basketball team accomplished two things in their 64-52 homecoming win over Tuskegee University on Saturday (Nov. 17) at the Tullis Arena.
 
The Panthers gained their first win of the season in three outings and posted a seventh straight homecoming game victory.
 
Danny Brown led three players in double-figures for Claflin with a game-high 17 points.
 
Brandon Davis came off the bench to score 15 points that included 7-of-8 from the free throw line for the Panthers.
 
Triston Thompson chipped in 12 points and dished out five assists for Claflin.
 
Cornellius Reynolds had nine rebounds off the bench for the Panthers.
 
For the game, the Panthers went 26-of-32 from the charity stripe and out rebounded Tuskegee by a 34-33 margin.
 
Tuskegee, winless on the season at 0-2, was led by Riley Hamilton with 11 points.
 
In the first eight minutes of the second-half, there was little separation between the two teams. The contest was tied three times during that period, the last being 35-35, before the Panthers erupted for a 12-2 run.
 
The offensive outburst provided Claflin with a 47-37 lead with 9:55 left.
 
Davis was instrumental in the run with seven points.
 
From that point, the Panthers cruised to their sixth straight win over Tuskegee by outscoring the Golden Tigers 17-15.
 
The last time Tuskegee posted a win over a Claflin team came during the 2013-14 season by a score of 90-72.
 
In the first six minutes of the opening half, the Panthers led 9-8 and increased the margin to 16-10 at the 8:51 mark on a free throw from Reynolds.
 
Claflin held the lead until Riley hit a three-pointer for Tuskegee, putting the Golden Tigers with 21-20 at 4:55 mark of the period.
 
The Panthers later broke a 22-22 tie when Brown connected on a three-pointer, giving Claflin a 25-22 lead with 2:10 left in the half.
 
The two teams traded free throws and the Panthers led 27-24 at intermission.
 
Claflin will return to the hardwood on Monday (Nov. 19) for its Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) opener against Saint Augustine's University. The contest is slated for 7:30 p.m. or 20 minutes at the conclusion of the women's game.
