Claflin Falls to Limestone in Overtime

Orangeburg, S.C. – Limestone College remained unbeaten on the season, outscoring Claflin University 12-9 in overtime for a 95-92 non-conference win at the Tullis Arena on Wednesday (Nov. 21).
 
The loss dropped Claflin to 2-3 on the season and ended a five-game winning streak over Limestone.
 
Limestone improved to 5-0 with the extra period victory.
 
Danny Brown led the Panthers in the losing effort with a game-high 28 points, 15 coming in the second half.
 
Four other players scored in double-figures for Claflin as Romero Hill scored 19 points followed by Cornellius Reynolds at 11 points and eight rebounds. Brandon Davis chipped in 12 points for the Panthers, and Triston Thompson added 10 points and 11 assists.
 
Limestone was led by T.J. Sheppard and Jaquan Simms with 25 points each.
 
In the overtime period, Claflin could get no closer than one point at 93-92 with 12.1 seconds left.
 
The Panthers had a chance at tying the contest in the closing seconds, but missed two three-point attempts.
 
In the second half, Claflin saw a 48-38 halftime lead wiped out as Limestone pulled even at 49-49 with 15:45 left in regulation. The Saints outscored the Panthers 11-1 to tie the contest.
 
Brown later tied the contest at 53-all on a three-pointer at the 14:16 mark, but the Saints used an 11-2 over the next two-plus minutes to go up 64-55 with 12:37 left.
                                                                                      
The Panthers would outscore the Saints 25-19 over the next 12 minutes to trail 83-80 with 6.6 seconds left.
 
Brown nailed a three-pointer as time expired to send the game into overtime tied at 83-83.
 
In the opening four minutes of the game, it was Brown verses the three-point shooting of Limestone. The contest was tied at 9-9 and Brown accounted for seven for Panthers total, while the Saints connected on three three-point baskets.
 
Following a dunk by Sheppard that gave Limestone an 11-9 lead at the 16:25 mark, the Saints would preserve the advantage over the next three minutes. Thompson completed a traditional three-point play with 13:00 left in the half, giving Claflin the lead at 17-15.
 
After four lead changes, the Panthers scored 11 straight points to build a 30-20 lead with 8:36 left in the half.
 
The two teams played on even terms the remainder of the half as Claflin led 48-38 at intermission.
The first half saw both teams shot the ball well as Claflin was 20-of-27 (74.1%) from the field and 36-70 (51.4%) for the game. Limestone hit 14-of-24 (58.3%) from the field in the first half and ended the game at 29-of-54 (53.7%).
 
The Panthers and the Saints combined for 17 three-pointers with Limestone hitting 11.
 
Claflin will return to Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) action at Shaw University on Saturday (Nov. 24) at 4 p.m.
