Chowan Holds off Claflin Down the Stretch

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – Undefeated Chowan University knocked down six free throws down the stretch to hold off Claflin University Panthers, 81-79, in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) contest in Saturday (Dec. 1) at the Helms Center.
 
The loss, Claflin fourth straight, dropped the Panthers to 2-6 overall and 1-2 against CIAA teams.
 
Danny Brown led Claflin with a career second-best of 23 points on 9-of-17 from the field. His career-high at Claflin of 28 points came against Limestone College a few weeks ago. Brown and Rodney Prichard, who dished out five assists, had three 3-pointers apiece to lead the Panthers in that department.
 
Prichard along with Romero Hill added 13 points each, while Cornellius Reynolds added eight points and five rebounds.
 
Chowan, now a perfect 6-0 on the season and 1-0 in the CIAA, was led in scoring by Timothy Bing with a game-high 28 points followed by Demetrius Sanders at 17 points and seven rebounds.
 
In the second half, Brown connected on a three-point basket with 7:08 left to give the Panthers a double-digit lead, 68-58.
 
Over the next 4:25 the Chowan offense erupted for a 13-2 run, moving ahead briefly at 71-70 with 2:43 left.
 
With the game tied at 72-72, Chowan took the lead for good on Michael Kelly second free throw of a two-shot foul for a 73-72 advantage with 2:28 left.
 
Claflin pulled within 75-74 with 58 seconds left on a pair of free throws from Brown but the Panthers could not get any closer as Chowan hit six straight free three in holding off Claflin.
 
Gus Rowland was perfect in all four attempts from the charity stripe for Chowan, while teammate Sanders added two free throws down the stretch.
 
For the game, Chowan was a perfect 26-of-26 at the free throw line compared to Claflin 14-of-18.
In the shooting department, Claflin shot 49.1% (28-of-57) that included 33.3% (9-of-27) from behind the three-point line.
 
Chowan shot 52.1% (25-of-48) for the game, including a sizzling 60.9% (14-of-22) in the second half.
 
Claflin held a slim 39-38 lead at the half.
 
Claflin will close out its four-game road trip on Monday (Dec. 3) at Elizabeth City State University.
