Claflin Stage 18-Point Comeback to Defeat Fayetteville State in CIAA Play

Fayetteville, NC – The Claflin University men's basketball team came from 18 points down en route to defeating Fayetteville State University by seven, 69-62, in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) southern division matchup.
 
With the win, the Panthers improve to 7-11 overall, 6-7 in the CIAA and 4-3 in the division.
 
Fayetteville State falls to 3-12 overall, 2-6 in the CIAA and 1-1 in the Division.
 
Danny Brown came off the bench to lead three Claflin players in double-digits with 19, including 4-of-5 from behind the three-point arc.
 
Triston Thompson dropped in 17 points while Austin Lawton was rounded out the double-digit scorers with 16.
 
Cornellius Reynolds contributed six points with nine rebounds and two blocks for Claflin.
 
Fayetteville State was led by Josh Bryant with 19 points.  Nakia Rivers scored 12 and Denzell Hosch dropped in 11 points for the Broncos in the loss.
 
Claflin late first-half momentum carried over to the start of the second half.
 
Fayetteville State scored the first two points of the half just eight seconds in, but then the Panthers went on a run that proved to be the ultimate momentum changer of the game.
 
The Panthers used an 11-4 run that was culminated by a three-pointer by Brown to cut the lead to one, 43-42, with 15:18 remaining in the contest.
 
A layup by the Broncos Will Brown 18 seconds later pushed the lead back to three but Claflin remained poised.
 
The Panthers stayed within striking distance over the next nine minutes allowing Fayetteville State no more than a six-point lead.  The Panthers pulled within one, 48-47, with just over 12 minutes showing on the clock.
 
Claflin took its first lead of the game at the 6:20 mark when a steal and layup by Thompson put the Panthers up 56-55.
 
There were two ties and four lead changes over the next five-plus minutes before Trent Rolle connected on two free-throws to give Claflin the lead for good with 1:49 remaining. 
 
The Panthers outscored the Broncos 8-1 over the final two minutes of the game en route to the seven point win.
Fayetteville State jumped out to a 14-5 lead within the first six minutes of play.  The Broncos pushed its lead to 11 (19-8) by the 10:35 mark but a jumper by Brown followed by a traditional three-point play by Lawton cut the led to six, 19-13, with 10:24 remaining in the half.
 
Fayetteville State offense picked up once again, pushing the lead to 18, 35-17, with 4:11 left but the Panthers kept chipping away.
 
Claflin outscored the Broncos 14-2 over the last four minutes of the half to close the gap to six, 37-31, at intermission.
 
Claflin will return to action next Monday, Jan. 28, when they travel to Charlotte, N.C. to face Johnson C. Smith University in a CIAA southern division matchup.
