Winston-Salem State Strong Second Half Lifts Rams over Claflin in CIAA Contest

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) outscored the Claflin University men's basketball by 20 points in the second half in posting a 97-79 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) win on Friday (Jan. 4).
 
With the loss, Claflin falls to 5-9 overall and 4-5 in the CIAA.
 
Mykal Johnson led the Panthers with 18 points and seven rebounds followed by Triston Thompson at 17 points and six steals.
 
Austin Lawton contributed 13 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots in the loss.
 
WSSU, now 7-5 and 2-2 in CIAA, was led in scoring by William Crandell with a double-double 29 points-10 rebounds. Robert Colon added 22 points for the Rams in the win.
 
In the second half, WSSU used a 19-7 run over the first 4:15 to turn a two-point halftime deficit (40-38) into a 10-point lead (57-47) at the 15:45 mark.
 
The Rams held the 10-point cushion twice over the next 2-1/2 minutes before increasing their margin to 15 points at 79-64 with 7:25 left in the game.
 
The Panthers managed to cut the WSSU lead under single digits at nine points (83-74) off a Thompson layup with 3:55 remaining but the Rams quickly pushed the margin back to double-digits on their next possession.  Colon hit a layup with 3:46 left, giving the home team an 85-74 advantage.
 
WSSU outscored Claflin 12-5 the rest of the way.
 
Claflin will return to the hardwood on Monday (Jan. 7) at home against Shaw University in a CIAA matchup for Community Night. The contest will follow the women's contest, which gets underway at 5:30 p.m.
