Claflin Battles, Falls Short at Elizabeth City State

Elizabeth, N.C. – The Claflin University men's basketball team battled till the end but fell just short, dropping a non-conference contest to Elizabeth City State University (ECSU), 60-57, at the R.L. Vaughan Center.
 
The loss drops the Panthers to 1-3 on the season while the Vikings improve to 5-1.
 
Brandon Davis led all scorers with 17 points along with two blocks while Donnell Frayer, Jr. also scored in double-figures with 10 points.  Cornellius Reynolds dropped in seven points and pulled down seven rebounds for the Panthers in the loss.
 
ECSU was led by Joseph Allen, who finished with a double-double, 16 points-14 rebounds.  Phillip Burwell scored 14 points and Justin Faison contributed 11 in the win.
 
After going into intermission with a 32-28 lead, Claflin maintained its lead through the first seven-plus minutes of the second half, before a layup by Joseph tied the contest 41-all with 12:35 remaining.
 
The teams exchanged the lead over the next eight points but a layup by Burwell with 8:54 remaining gave the Vikings the lead for good (47-45).
 
The Panthers remained within striking distance the rest of the way, cutting the deficit to one on two occasions down the stretch, before falling by the three-point margin.
 
ECSU controlled the first five-plus minutes of the opening stanza, going up by seven, 14-7, at the 14:56 mark.  The Vikings went up by as many as 12 (11-23) at the 9:34 mark before Claflin offense went on a run.
 
The Panthers used a 13-0 run over the next five minutes to take a one-point lead, 24-23.  Claflin would go up by seven, 32-25, with 48 seconds remaining in the first half before a three-pointer by Burwell cut the deficit to four, 32-28, at the half.
 
Claflin will remain on the road, Saturday (Nov. 23) when they face Virginia State University in a 4:00 p.m. contest at the Virginia State University Convocation Center.
