Claflin Falls to Virginia Union in CIAA Men's Basketball Action

Richmond, Va. – The Claflin men's basketball team closed out its three-game road swing with a 76-71 loss to Virginia Union University (VUU) in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) contest.
 
The loss drops Claflin to 1-5 on the season and 0-2 in the CIAA.  VUU improve to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in the CIAA.
 
Letrell West led Claflin with 19 points.  Donnell Frayer, Jr. was the only other Panther player to score in double-figures with 11 points.
 
Brandon Davis added nine points with five rebounds and Devin Smith contributed nine points in the contest.
 
VUU was led by Terrell Leach with a game-high 28 points.  Jordan Peebles recorded a double-double 15 points-11 rebounds for VUU.
 
After heading into the locker-room at the half tied at 29-29, the Panthers opened the second-half with a 6-0 run to take a 35-29 advantage at the 18:59 mark.
 
VUU used a 9-2 run of its own to gain the one-point lead, 39-37, with 16:33 left in the game.
 
After Claflin pushed its lead to four on three occasions, the last 54-50 at the 9:55 mark, VUU's offense regained the momentum.
 
VUU used a 7-2 run to take the lead for good, 57-56, with 7:59 remaining in the game.  VUU pushed its lead to eight, 68-60, with 2:59 left before taking the five-point victory.
 
VUU took an eight-point lead, 14-6, at the 12:27 mark of the opening half, but Claflin's offense was resilient. 
 
The Panthers chipped away at the lead over the next three-plus minutes as a Davis free-throw provided a one point lead17-16, with 8:48 remaining in the half.
 
After exchanging the lead over the next minute-plus, VUU managed to take a five-point lead on two occasions before Claflin battled back once again to tie the game at 29-all heading into intermission.
 
VUU had a slight advantage in the field goal department, shooting 41.8 percent compared to 40.4 percent by Claflin.  The Panthers did manage to lead in free-throws and three-point shooting.  Claflin shot 87.5 percent to 82.8 percent for VUU from the charity stripe and 44.4 percent compared to 30 percent from the three-point range.
 
The Panthers will return home on Dec. 2 to face Winston-Salem State University in another CIAA contest.  Tip-off is set for 20-minutes after the conclusion of the women's game at approximately 7:30 p.m. in Tullis Arena on the Claflin campus.
