West Scores 33 Points in Claflin Panthers Win

West Chester, Pa. – Letrell West scored a game-high 33 points as the Claflin University Panthers defeated Kutztown University, 94-77, in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA)/Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Challenge on Saturday (Nov. 9).
 
Claflin wrapped up the early season classic, played on the campus of West Chester University (Pa.), with a 1-1 record.
 
West, the Panthers sophomore guard, scored 21 of his 33 points in the first half. He finished the game shooting 11-of-15 (73.3 %) from the field including four three-pointers.
 
Two other Claflin players scored in double-figures, as Brandon Davis and Romero Hill finished with 14 and 12 points, respectively.  Hill and Noah Jenkins, who added eight points, dished out four assists each, while Cornellius Reynolds pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
 
Tarojae Brake and Wesley Butler were the top scorers for Kutztown with 15 points each.  Kyree Generett scored 10 points and Akello Mosby pulled in 10 rebounds for the Golden Bears in the loss.
 
The Panthers finished the game shooting 58.9 percent (33-of-56) from the floor with eight three-pointers, while Kutztown shot 37.9 percent (22-of-58) and had nine three-point baskets.
 
Claflin set the tone for the contest early by racing out to a 16-4 lead by the 16:39 mark of the first half. West scored 14 of the Panthers 16 points during the run.
 
The Panthers maintained the double-digit cushion over the next two minutes, pushing its lead to 21-6 off a Hill a three-pointer at the 14:48 mark.
 
Later in the half, Jenkins provided Claflin with a 20-point lead, scoring on a layup off from an assist from Reynolds with 5:52 left in the period. The Panthers outscored the Golden Bears 22-17 in building the lead.
 
Claflin increased its lead to 54-29 at the half.
 
The Panthers finished the opening half shooting a sizzling 67.7 percent (23-for-34) from the floor with six three-point baskets.
 
In the second half, the two teams played on even terms over the first 10 minutes, scoring 21 points apiece.  The Panthers owned a 75-50 lead at the midway point of the final stanza.
 
Kutztown outscored Claflin 27-19 in the final 10 minutes.
 
Claflin will return to the hardwood on Wednesday (Nov. 13) at home against Augusta University of the Peach Belt Conference.  The Jaguars are ranked 11th in the D2SIDA Men's Basketball Preseason National Poll. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. at the Jonas T. Kennedy Health and Wellness Center (Tullis Arena).
 
Following the matchup, the Panthers will entertain Fisk University for homecoming on Saturday (Nov. 16) at 3:30 p.m.
