Brown, Lawton Leads Claflin Past Johnson C. Smith

Orangeburg, S.C. – Danny Brown scored a career 29 points and Austin Lawton posted his third double-double of the season, 22 points and 10 rebounds, as Claflin University rolled past Johnson C. Smith University, 87-78, in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) southern Division matchup on Monday (Feb. 11) at the Tullis Arena.

The win extended Claflin currently winning streak to four games and improved the Panthers record to 11-12 overall and 9-8 in the CIAA, including 7-4 in the division.

Brown, who was 10-of-15 from the floor with five three-pointers, surpassed a previous high of 28 points against Limestone College earlier in the season, while Lawton blocked a season-high six shots.

Brown and Lawton combined for 51 points in the game compared to 24 in the first meeting.

Triston Thompson turned in an all-round performance for the Panthers with 11 points, seven rebounds, five steals and career second-best nine assists. Thompson dished out 11 assists against Limestone.

Cornellius Reynolds had nine points with a game-high 12 rebounds for Claflin, while Jaimik Moore added nine points and six rebounds off the bench.

Claflin outrebounded Johnson C. Smith 46-24.

Johnson C. Smith, now 7-15 and 5-2 in the CIAA, was led by Roddric Ross with a game-high 32 points followed by Cayse Minor at 24 points.

The Panthers made sure the game wouldn't be a repeat of the last time in Charlotte, N.C. when the Golden Bulls won 64-63 in the closing seconds.

The Panthers used a late first-half surge followed by a 22-4-run to start the second-half in gaining control of the game.

The contest was close throughout the first 15 minutes of the opening half with no lead larger than four points. The last five minutes of the half would see the Panthers outscore the Golden Bulls 13-10 to lead 37-30 at intermission.

The momentum carried into the first 6:50 minutes of the second half where the Claflin offense built a 59-34 cushion. Brown capped off the offensive explosion with a three-pointer with 13:10 left.

The Golden Bulls made the contest close in the final 13 minutes by outscoring Claflin 44-28. The Golden Bulls cut the Panthers lead to 82-75 with 1:18 on three free throws from Nenad Milenkovic.

Claflin closed out the contest by scoring five of the game's last eight points.

The Panthers shot 51.7 percent (30-for-58) from the field with six three-pointers, while Johnson C. Smith hit 41.7 percent (25-for-60) from the floor with eight three-pointers.

Claflin will take a break from CIAA action, traveling to Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) member Morehouse College on Wednesday (Feb. 13). The Panthers will conclude the regular-season at home next week with Livingstone College on (Feb. 18) followed by arch-rival Benedict College on (Feb. 21).
