Claflin Goes 0-5 in Bearcat/Fleet Invitational

Greenwood, S.C. (Feb. 15-16) – The Claflin University softball team had a combined 24 hits over five games as they went 0-5 in the Bearcat/Fleet Invitational last weekend (Friday-Saturday, Feb. 15-16).  The tournament was co-hosted by Erskine College and Lander University in Due West, SC and Greenwood, S.C.
 
Claflin (5-8) recorded 11 of their 24 hits on Friday (Feb. 15).  The Lady Panthers had two hits in the 6-0 loss to Erskine College in their opening game.  Claflin also had two hits in the middle game of the day, as they fell to Carson-Newman 13-0.
 
The Lady Panthers third game on Friday was their best of the weekend as they knocked out seven hits with five runs and three RBIs.
 
Claflin got on the scoreboard first with two runs in the opening inning.  Concord scored three runs in the third, two in the fifth and one in the sixth to take a 6-2 advantage.
 
The Lady Panthers bats came back to life in the top of the seventh, as they used two hits along with three miscues from Concord to score three runs and pull within one.
 
Claflin comeback fell short as Jasmine Squirewell struck out for the third out of the inning.
 
The Lady Panthers was much more competitive to open play on Saturday (Feb. 16) knocking out nine hits with three runs in falling 6-3 to Carson-Newman.
 
Kadasia Damon, LaKaylin Lee and Kayla Cato had two hits each in the contest.  Damon, Lee and Jada Ames scored one run apiece for Claflin in the loss.
 
Claflin closed the tournament with a 10-2 loss to host Lander University.  In the contest, the Lady Panthers had four hits, one each from Lee, Chaston Huntly, Ames and Squirewell, along with two RBIs.  Lee and Huntly were the only players who managed to cross the plate in the contest.
 
Claflin will look to redeem itself when they travel to Hartsville, SC for a non-conference double header with Coker College.
