Claflin Goes 2-2 to Open 2019 Season

Newberry, S.C.—The Claflin University softball team went 2-2 over the 2019 opening weekend.  The Lady Panthers went 1-1 on Saturday (Feb. 2) and 1-1 on Sunday (Feb. 3) in the Round Robin Tournament hosted by Newberry College.
 
On Saturday, Claflin defeated Mercyhurst 5-1 in its season opener and fell to host Newberry 11-1 in five innings.
 
Senior LaKaylin Lee, who was the winning pitcher of record, went 2-for-3 with one run and a walk in the win.
 
Freshman Chaston Huntly went 2-for-2 with a double and two runs while senior Kayla Cato was 2-for-4 with two hits and one run in the season opening win.
 
Can could not find much offense in its second game of the day, falling to host Newberry, 11-0. 
 
The Lady Panthers recorded just two hits in the contest, one by Huntly and one by sophomore Jada Ames.
 
Bre'zhay Chambers went 2.1 innings on the mound and credited with the loss.
 
On Sunday, the Lady Panthers opened with an 8-3 win over Mercyhurst.
 
Lee was equally as solid against the Lakers on day two, finishing 1-for-4 with a homerun, a walk and three RBIs.
 
Huntly finished 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs while Ashley Thomas went 3-for-4 with two runs and a RBI.
 
Freshman Shaniya Thomas came one in relief to pitch three solid innings in picking up the win.
 
Claflin had a much better showing against Newberry in the final game of the weekend.
 
Down 6-0 heading into the sixth, the Lady Panthers scored five runs off three hits and three miscues by Newberry to pull within one run, 6-5.
 
The Wolves put up three runs in its half of the six and held the Lady Panthers scoreless in the top of the seventh to pick-up the 9-5 win.
 
Senior Kayla Cato wen 1-for-3 with a double, one run and two RBIs to lead Claflin in the loss.
 
Thomas, Huntly, Angel Johnson and Chelise Morman, who came in as a pinch runner, all scored a run in the game.
 
Lee was the losing pitcher of record.

Claflin will head to Acworth, Ga., next weekend, Saturday-Sunday, Feb. 9-10, to participate in the HBCU DII Invite.
