Claflin Softball Drops Two to Limestone

Gaffney, S.C. –  The Claflin University softball team dropped a mid-week non-conference double header to Limestone College, 1-0, 8-0, at Babe Ruth Field in Gaffney, S.C.  This marks the first time since late February that the Lady Panthers has dropped back-to-back games.

Claflin falls to 30-15 on the season while Limestone goes to 17-21 on the season.

There was minimal hitting in game one as the teams combined for just four hits, two by each team.

Chaston Huntly singled up the middle in the top of the fourth to record Claflin first hit of the game and Kayla Cato got the team second hit as she led off the top of the seventh with a double to left field.

Huntly and Cato were the only two batters to reach base in the game for the Lady Panthers, with both touching the bags twice.

Limestone's lone run came in the bottom of the third as a single by Vic Brewington to left field scored Ruthie Jackson who singled to shortstop to start the inning.

The Saints took control early in game two, scoring one run in the first and seven in the second to take an 8-0 lead by end of two.

After neither team scored in the third, Claflin offense appeared to have kicked into gear.  The Lady Panthers placed their first two runners on base in the top of the fourth, Cato reached base on a passed ball by the catcher following a strikeout and Huntly who singled to centerfield.  Cato and Huntly were left stranded after the next three batters got out via a strikeout a flyout and a groundout.

The Lady Panthers defense was solid in the bottom of the fourth, with a 1-2-3 inning but could not score in the top of the fifth thus falling by the eight-run margin.

Huntly continued to play solidly, finishing game two, 2-for-2.  Angel Johnson also went 2-for-2 in the contest.

Limestone was led in game two by Brewington who went 2-for-3 with a run and three RBIs.

Claflin will return to action, next Wednesday, Apr. 17, when they closeout Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play at Livingstone College.  The double header, which was originally scheduled for Sunday, Apr. 14 but changed due to the threat of inclement weather, will have a 1 pm first pitch for game one.
