Claflin Falls to Virginia State to Go 1-1 on Opening Day of the CIAA Tournament

Salem, Va. – The Claflin University softball team dropped a tough 2-1 decision to Virginia State University in the second round of the 2019 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Post-season Tournament to go 1-1 on the opening day of the tournament, which will run through Wednesday, May 1 at the James I. Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Va.

The Lady Panthers drop to 33-18 on the season and will face Fayetteville State (10-24) in the elimination game.  Fayetteville State defeated Elizabeth City State University in its second game on the day.

First pitch is set for 12 noon on Tuesday, Apr. 30.  Tuesday's game will be available via live stream at theciaasn.com and via live stats at https://theciaa.com/sidearmstats/softball2/summary.  Links will be available at game-time.

The first part of the contest was a pitcher's duel, as neither team managed to cross the plate over the first three innings.  Sydnee Brown hit a two-out RBI single up the middle to score Brooklynn Bilyard for Virginia State to score the first run of the game in the top of the fourth.

Claflin came back in its half of the fourth to tie the game as Kayla Cato scored off a ground out by Chaston Huntly.  Cato hit a double down the leftfield line to reach the base pads with one out.  Jada Ames flew out to center field to end the Lady Panthers inning.

Virginia State scored what turned out to be the winning run in top of the fifth, as Samantha Cunningham scored off a two-out error by Claflin left fielder for the 2-1 lead.

Claflin offense could not cross the plate over the last two innings, thus falling by the one run margin.

Bilyard picked up her 11th win of the season on the mound for Virginia State while Shaniya Thomas, the 2019 CIAA Rookie of the Year and Pitcher of the Year, drops to 12-2 on the season.
