Lady Panthers Softball Remains Undefeated in the CIAA

Orangeburg, S.C. – The Claflin University Lady Panthers softball team swept Saint Augustine's 7-0 and 10-1, to remain undefeated in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). With the wins, the Lady Panthers improved to 26-13 overall and 11-0 in the CIAA.

Saint Augustine's dropped to 1-12 overall and 1-9 in the CIAA.

Kayla Cato finished the day 2-for-5 with a double, a triple, three runs and a RBI while Chaston Huntly went 3-for-5, with a triple, four runs and three RBIs.

Jada Ames finished with three hits including two doubles a triple and three RBIs while Chelise Morman went 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs-triple.

Makayla August had two hits in game one and Briana Person went 3-for-3 with a run in game two to lead Saint Augustine's.

Game one of the double header was a pitchers dual over the first three and a half innings as neither team managed to cross the plate.  During that stretch, there were only two base runners, both by Saint Augustine's.

With two outs in the top of the fourth, Cato hit a triple to right center for Claflin first base runner of the game.  The triple by Cato was the first of five base runners, all who crossed the plate in the bottom of the third.

Huntly followed Cato's triple with a RBI triple to down the right-field line for the first run of the game and scored the second run on the throw.  Ames hit a double and scored off a RBI triple by Chelise Morman to put the Lady Panthers ahead 3-0.

Marion Goins was hit-by-pitch to put runners on first and third.  A stolen base by Goins and an errant throw by the catcher allowed Morman to score Claflin fourth run of the inning, with Goins advancing to third.  Goins scored the fifth run of inning off a wild pitch.

After neither team crossed the plate in the fifth, the Lady Panthers put up two additional runs in the bottom of the sixth for the 7-0 advantage.

The Lady Panthers defense remained solid in the top of the seventh for the victory.

Game two belonged solely to Claflin.

After Saint Augustine's scored a run in the top of the first, the Lady Panthers scored four runs in their half of the inning to take control of the game.  Claflin put up four runs in the second and one in each of the third and fourth for the 10-1 advantage.

The Lady Panthers held the Falcons in the top of the fifth en route to the nine run victory.

Claflin will return to the diamond this Saturday, Apr. 6 when they host Winston-Salem State University in a CIAA double header.  It will be senior day for the Lady Panthers with senior day activities occurring prior to the first pitch at approximately 12:30 p.m.
