Claflin Falls to Winston-Salem State in CIAA Softball Championship

Salem, Va. – After defeating Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) 11-3 in the opening game on Championship Day to force an if-necessary game, the Claflin Lady Panthers fell to WSSU, 5-4, in the 2019 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Championship Game.
 
Claflin ends its historic season 37-19.  The Rams goes to 32-11 and receive the conference automatic berth into the NCAA DII Regionals.
 
Chaston Huntly, Kayla Cato and Marion Goins all garnished CIAA All-Tournament Honors.
 
Claflin came from four runs down in the bottom of the fourth of game two to tie the game at 4-all in the top of the seventh.
 
The Lady Panthers comeback started in the top of the fifth.  Claflin placed its first two batters on base in the top of the inning.  Chelise Morman singled up the middle and Marion Goins reached via a throwing error by the second baseman.  Both players advanced to scoring position off the error.  LaKaylin Lee hit a RBI grounder to the short stop to score Morman for the Lady Panthers first run of the game.  Angel Johnson fouled out to the catcher to end the inning.
 
After holding WSSU scoreless in the bottom of the fifth, Claflin added a run in the top of the sixth as Kayla Cato hit a homer run to left center with one out.  The Rams defense held solid the remainder of the inning.
 
The Lady Panthers defense remained solid in the bottom of the inning, forcing WSSU to a three-up-three-down inning.
 
Claflin had three more chances to at least tie the game and prolong the game.
 
Morman, led off the final inning with a single up the middle and Thomas singled to the pitcher to give the Lady Panthers two runners with one out.
 
With two outs, Johnson singled up the middle to load the bases and Huntly followed with a two run single to right field to tie the game at 4-all.  Cato lined out to end the inning.
 
Chambers lead off the bottom of the seventh with a single to third base and advanced to second on a sac bunt.  A fly out by Davis, the Most Valuable Player, to scored Chambers for the winning run.
 
The first three and a half innings of game two was a pitcher's duel as neither team managed to cross the plate.
 
Winston-Salem State scored four runs off four hits in the bottom of the fourth to open the scoring in the game.   
 
Morman went 2-for-3 with two runs Kayla Cato went 2-for-4 in game two for Claflin. 
 
Shaniya Thomas was the losing pitcher in the contest and Davis picked up the win.
 
 
Lee drew a walk to start the opening game of the day.  With two outs and one on, Cato reached base on a fielding error by WSSU first baseman scoring Lee from second.   After Kaelea Robinson walked, Shauneyah Nichols flew out to center field to end the inning.
 
WSSU wasted no time getting the run back.  With one out Snipes hit a home run to right center to tie the game at 1-1.  The Lady Panthers defense retired the remaining two players of the innings.
 
Claflin had a breakout second inning, posting six runs off seven hits to take a 7-1 lead after one and a half. Morman started the scoring in the inning for the Lady Panthers, leading off with a homer to left center. 
 
With the bases loaded and one out, Chaston Huntly hit a two-run single to right field to put Claflin ahead 4-1.  A sac bunt by Cato, scores the Lady Panthers fifth run of the game.
 
A Robinson single scored Huntly and Morman recorded her second hit of the inning, a RBI single, to score Robinson, to put Claflin up by six. Marion Goins struck out to end the inning.
 
Claflin added one additional run in the top of the third to take a commanding 8-1 lead.
 
WSSU offense got its bats going in their half of the inning, loading the bases with one out.  Alleigh Himes hit a two-run double down the third-base line to score two runs and cut the deficit to 8-3.  Shauntaja Dedecker popped up to third base to end the inning.
 
Claflin scored one run each in the top of the fourth and top of the fifth and held the Rams scoreless over the two innings to take a 10-3 advantage after six.  The Lady Panthers put up one more run in the top of the six en route to the victory.
 
Johnson went 2-for-3 with two runs and a RBI in the contest.  Huntly, Morman and Goins all went 2-for-4 in the win.  Lee also recorded two runs on the day.
 
WSSU was led at the plate by Jasmine McCain with two hits.  Snipes, Chambers and Nyla Howard all crossed the plate for the Rams in the opening game.
 
Bre'Zhay Chambers picked up her third win of the Championships and her 17th on the season while Davis was the losing pitcher in the game.
