Claflin Softball Pickup Three Wins in Four Outings

Lady Panthers Open CIAA Play with Two Wins

Orangeburg, SC – The Claflin University softball team pick up three wins over the weekend, Saturday-Sunday, March 7-8.  The Lady Panthers split a non-conference doubleheader with East Stroudsburg on Saturday and swept Johnson C. Smith University in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) doubleheader on Sunday.
 
In Saturday's doubleheader, Claflin defeated East Stroudsburg 5-1 in game one and fell to the Warriors 10-0 in game two.
 
Bre'Zhay Chambers pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts and just one earned run with only one walk against 30 batters faced.
 
Claflin had four different players to score its five runs with Jaelyn Jackson scoring two and Ashley Thomas, Angel Johnson and Jada Ames scoring one each.
 
Chaston Huntly led the offense in the hit department with two.  Thomas, Ames, Camryn Hollis and Jackson had one hit apiece for the Lady Panthers who finished with six over the seven innings.
 
The Lady Panthers could not find any offense in game two, finishing with just one run over the five innings.  Claflin defense allowed 10 runs with 11 hits with five errors in the contest.
 
Jackson had the Lady Panthers lone hit in the contest.
 
Shaniya Thomas went 5.1 innings allowing all 11 hits with 10 runs, six earned, with four strikeouts in being credited with the loss.
 
The Lady Panthers opened their 2020 CIAA play with a 2-0 and 6-1 sweep of Johnson C. Smith on Sunday.
 
In the opening game, Chambers had another solid outing, allowing just one hit, one run with nine strikeouts against 22 batters faced.  The win was Chambers fourth of season.

 
Janell Brown had three of Claflin 12 hits.  Brown also added 2 RBIs to her stat line.
 
Thomas and Jackson scored the two runs for the Lady Panthers.
 
Claflin offense remained aggressive in game two of the doubleheader, finishing with nine hits. The Panthers defense was equally as solid allowing just four hits and one run.
 
Shainya Thomas, who went a complete game, allowed just four hits, one run with 12 strikeouts against 25 batters faced.
 
Jada Ames led the Lady Panthers at the plate with two hits and two runs.
