Claflin Cruise Past Winston-Salem State in CIAA Softball Action

Game Two of Doubleheader Stopped Due to Weather

Orangeburg, SC – The Claflin University softball team cruised past Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) 11-0 in five innings in the first game of a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) doubleheader. The second game of the doubleheader was stopped in the bottom of the second inning due to rain, with no makeup date scheduled.
 
The two teams were scheduled to meet in a doubleheader in Winston-Salem, NC last Friday, but it was postponed due to unplayable field conditions.
 
Claflin improved to 5-0 overall and in the conference while WSSU dropped to 4-1 overall and in the conference.
 
Bre'Zhay Chambers (2-0) was very solid on the mound. The 5-3 right-hander from Rock Hill, SC, struck out seven of the 21 batters she faced and allowed just one hit with one earned run, was credited with the win.
 
Claflin scored in each of the four innings. The Lady Panthers put up four runs in the first and third, one in the second, and two in the fourth for its 11 runs.
 
Leadoff batter Ashely Thomas went 3-for-3, with four runs a walk, and five stolen bases. Jaelyn Jackson and June "Olivia" Montgomery had two runs each, while Sametra duck, Jada Ames, and Mercedes Howze rounded out the scoring for Claflin.
 
The Rams' lone run was scored by Alleshia Pullen. Teanna Davis and Pullen contributed one hit apiece and while Kameryn Kirby had two runs in the loss.
 
Tia Robinson was the losing pitcher for WSSU.
 
Claflin will travel to Raleigh, NC next Saturday, Apr. 3 to take on the Trojans of Virginia State University in a CIAA Doubleheader.
