Lady Panthers, Panthers kick off conference championship meet with strong efforts

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Claflin University men's and women's track & field teams had great start to the 2022 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Indoor Track & Field Championship Meet. While the bulk of the meet's finals events will be held tomorrow, both of the Claflin teams were able to get some key qualifiers for event finals tomorrow while also getting some day one points.

The Lady Panthers did the bulk of their work on the track with several qualifiers and some early points. Senior Sky Buie-Cox made some early noise for the Lady Panthers when she placed seventh in the women's 1-Mile Run. She ran a 6:01.32 in the event. She also ran the lead leg of the women's distance medley. The team placed fifth with a 14:38.38. She ran a 25.68 in the women's 200m dash and she followed the effort with a 58.41 in the women's 400m dash.

The Panthers had some impressive performances of their own on the opening day of the meet. The freshman duo of Darius Holmes and Quandarius Patrick both qualified for the finals of the men's 60m dash. Holmes placed fifth in the event preliminaries with an 8.74 while Patrick added an eighth-place finish at 8.98.
