Great Performances Highlight Panthers at Weems Baskin Relays
COLUMBIA, SC - The Claflin University men's outdoor track & field team made a great return to action this weekend with some great showings at the Weems-Baskin Relays hosted by the University of South Carolina. The two-day meet saw the Panthers post some of the top performances in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA).
The Panthers set the tone on the track with some great showings. It was the Panthers' young runners who led the way at the meet. The team set the tone in the men's 400m dash where freshman
Jaevon Riley and sophomore
Zion Murry posted the top two times in the conference. Riley the way when the ran a 48.36 to place 29
th in the event. The time is currently the best I the CIAA while Murry placed 43
rd with a 48.70. The time is the second-best time in the CIAA. Fellow freshman
Jonathan Flemister added a 21.68 in the men's 200m dash to place 38
th and is currently the top time in the CIAA.
While the youngsters led the way on the track, the Panthers' upperclassmen led the way in field events. Senior
Matthew Rox led the way when he set a school record with a 151'11" (46.31m) throw in the men's javelin throw. The previous record holder was Francis Highland, who had a 44.48m throw in Pembroke, North Carolina on April 21, 2007. The distance is the second best in the CIAA. Claflin sophomore
Jocolbi Morgan had a 23'7.5" (7.20m) jump in the men's long jump to place second in the event. The distance is currently the third best in the CIAA.
The Panthers will return to action on April 8
