Panthers, Lady Panthers Open 2024 CIAA Indoor Track & Field Championships with a Strong Day One

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Claflin University men's and women's indoor track & field teams got a strong start with an impressive first day at the 2024 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field Championship Meet. The Panthers totaled 35 first day points to lead the men's standings while the Lady Panthers totaled 19 points to finish in fifth place on day one of the championship meet.
 
The bulk of the Panthers' scoring came on the track where the team had some great efforts. The Panthers got a big boost in the men's mile run with 14 points as sophomores Reginald Gore and Jakarriez Sanders finished in second and third place in the event. Sanders placed second with a 4:35.96 while Gore placed third with a 4:35.97. The Panthers also got 10 points from a first place finish in the men's distance medley relay with a 10:55.81. Junior Jocolbi Morgan added to the scoring as well when he placed second in the men's long jump with a 24'5.75" (7.46m) jump.
 
The Lady Panthers got the bulk of their scoring from field events. In the women's high jump, freshman Marlayna McBride placed second with a 5'2.25" (1.58m) jump. In the long jump, freshman Jhnyia Knuckles added a third-place finish with an 18'1" (5.51m) jump. On the track, the Lady Panthers' distance medley relay team placed fourth with a 14:06.28.
