Panthers Open Outdoor Season at Susan Rouse Invitational
CENTRAL, SC - The Claflin University men's and women's track & field teams kicked off the 2024 outdoor track & field season with some great showings at the 2024 Susan Rouse Invititational hosted by Southern Wesleyan University. Both the teams saw some great efforts on the track and in field events.
The Lady Panthers had some dominating efforts in the track. Freshman Malika COutain set the stage with second place finishes in the women's 200m dash with a 25.79. She also placed second in the women's 400m dash with a 59.77. The team wasn't done as freshman Jasmine Young won the womens 800m run with 2:32.63. Junior Pheijana Burnside also placed second in the women's 100m hurdles with a 15.49 as well as a second place finish in the women's 400m hurdles with a 1:08.16.
While the Lady Panthers did some great things on the track, the team was equally impressive in the field events. Freshman Marlayna McBride won the women's high jump with a 5'3" (1.60m). She also won the women's triple jump with a 34'11.75" (10.66m) jump.
For the Panthers, there were also some great efforts on the track. Freshman sprinter
Ivan Taylor added a third place in the men's 800m run with a 2:00.57. Panthers sophomore
Darius Holmes won the men's 110m hurdles with a 15.64. Fellow sophomore
Marcus Thomason won the men's 400m hurdles with a 54.57.
As a team, the Lady Panthers and Panthers will return to action on March 15
th when the teams head to Orlando, Florida to take part in the UCF Black & Gold Invitational. Claflin junior
Jocolbi Morgan will compete in the 2024 NCAA Division II Men's Indoor Track & Field National Championship Meet on March 8-9 in Pittsburg, Kansas.
