Newton to Coach in 2025 HBCU All-Star Dream Classic at Rucker Park

ORANGEBURG, SC - Claflin University men's basketball assistant coach Edward Newton will head to one of basketball's most hallowed grounds. He was selected to join the coaching staff at the 2025 HBCU All-Star Dream Classic, which will be held at historic Holcombe Rucker Park in Harlem, New York on Saturday, August 9th.
 
Newton will be one of the coaches to lead 40 of the best HBCU basketball players in the world when they put their athletic abilities on display on one of the most famous basketball courts in the world. The event will feature athletes from the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), National Association of Intercollegiate Athletic (NAIA) and Independent conferences.
 
The 2025 HBCU All-Star Dream Classic game will be the highlight of weekend filled with activities. In addition to the all-star game, the event will also include a women's HBCU vs. City 3x3 Tournament, step show performances from the Divine Nine as well as performances by HBCU and high school bands, cheerleaders, and DJs. Along with food trucks, a t-shirt/footwear design competition, scholarships, and school supply give-a-ways, the event will offer a merging of HBCU sports, traditions, education, and Urban Streetball Culture.
 
Holcombe Rucker Park is one of the most famous venues in basketball. Located in Harlem, New York, the park has hosted several legendary basketball players, including Julius "Dr. J" Erving, Willis Reed, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlin, and Earl "The Goat" Manigault. More recently, legendary players like Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and many others have all played on the historic court.
 
Newton has been an assistant coach on the Panthers men's basketball team since the summer of 2022 when he joined head coach Brion Dunlap. Since then, the Panthers have compiled a 57-28 overall record.
 
The 2025 HBCU All-Star Dream Classic will be held on Saturday, August 9, 2025. The event will kick off with the HBCU vs. City Women's 3x3 Tournament with numerous events taking place before the men's HBCU All-Star game taking place at 8:30 p.m.
