Claflin Men’s Basketball Defeats St. Augustine’s for First Win of the Season

Orangeburg, S.C.--Montel Williams led three players in double-figures with 17 points as the Claflin University Panthers picked up its first win of the season, defeating St. Augustine's, 81-65, Saturday at the Tullis Arena.  Kendall Jackson scored 15 and Arthur Talley dropped in 11 for Panthers who improved to 1-2 on the short season. 
 
St. Augustine's, which remained winless at 0-3, was led by Raheem Jolliffe with a game-high 21 points. Keith Crawford added 10 points for the Falcons in the loss.
 
Claflin used the three-point shot and their size inside to dominate the game, shooting 52 percent from the field, 84 percent from the charity stripe (21 of 25) along with the 34-23 rebounding advantage.  The Panthers, who connected on six shots from behind the three-point arc in the first half, enjoyed a 22 point lead at the half, 44-22.
 
The second half was a little more competitive as St. Augustine's scored just four less points in the stanza, 37-33. The Falcons did manage to have a good shooting night from free-throw line, hitting 15-of-16 from the charity stripe.  As a team, they shot 40 percent from the field.
 
Claflin will return to action next weekend, Friday-Saturday, Nov. 28-29, when they travel to Pensacola, Fla. to participate in the Thanksgiving Classic hosted by West Florida.
