Claflin Splits Baseball Doubleheader with Coker

Panthers Defeat Cobras for the First Time in Randall Era

Orangeburg, S.C.—The Claflin University baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Coker College winning Game One 6-5 and dropping Game Two 0-28.  The Game One win marks the first time that Coach Randall has led his team to a victory over the Cobras.

Coker (12-8) jumped out early on Claflin (6-11), putting up three runs in the top of the first.  The Panthers in turn put up two runs off two hits with one Cobra error in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit to one, 2-3.  Coker put up one run in the top of the fourth to push the lead to two, 2-4.  After both teams put up one run in the fifth, the Panthers put up two runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 5-5.  After holding Coker scoreless in the top of the seventh the Panthers continued to strike.  Sixto Guerrero doubled to put the winning run on the base pads in the bottom of the seventh.  A ground-out to the short-stop moved Guerrero to third and a consequent wild pitch allowed him to cross the plate for the winning run.

Game Two of the doubleheader belonged solely to Coker as they saw 15 batters reach base.  The Cobras had seven hit batters, two walks and six hits including a grand slam homerun which led to for 13 runs in the top of the first.  The Cobras put up four runs in the second, four in the third, three in the fourth and four in the fifth en route to its 28 runs.  The Cobras had 19 total hits while allowing just four by the Panthers.

Darius Boykins, who pitched a complete game, was the winner of Game One and Nicholas Mcalhany was the loser of Game Two.  Alex Hernandez and Adam Webb were the loser and winner for Coker, respectively.

Claflin will look to bounce back tomorrow, Wednesday, March 12, when they host St. Augustine's in a non-conference doubleheader.  First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Historic Mirmow Field in Orangeburg.
