Orangeburg, S.C.—The Claflin University baseball team split a Southern Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (SIAC) doubleheader with Clark Atlanta University (CAU) winning Game One 7-4 and dropping Game Two 3-9.  The teams will meet in the rubber match of the series tomorrow, Monday, March 31.  First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Historic Mirmow Field in Orangeburg.

In Game One Claflin (15-13, 8-5 SIAC) came from three down to defeat CAU (7-18, 5-9 SIAC).  After Claflin scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning, CAU used two hits and three Claflin errors to put up four runs to take the 1-4 lead in the top of the second.  After neither team scored in the third and fourth innings, Claflin bats came to life.  The Panthers put six runs off five hits and one CAU error  in the bottom of the fifth to regain the lead, 7-4.  Claflin would hold CAU scoreless over the next two innings en route to the three-run victory.  Claflin was led by Reginald Rodgers who scored two runs in the contest.  Wendell Ferguson, Johnny Stevenson, Rashad Bivens, Thomas Clay and Jabari Brown all scored one run each.  Justin Vreeland, who pitched a complete game, was the winner of Game One giving up just one earned run over the seven innings.

Claflin remained aggressive to start Game Two.  The Panthers put up one run in the second and two in the third to take a quick 3-0 lead.  CAU's offense came to life as they put up four runs off five hits in the top of the fourth to take the one run lead, 3-4.  Neither team would score over the next two innings, than CAU's picked up the momentum once again.  In the top of the seventh they put up five runs off four hits and one Claflin error to take a 3-9 lead.  The Panthers would not score in the bottom of the seventh thus falling by the six run margin.  Rodgers, Jesse Minter and Darius Osby scored one run each for Claflin in the loss.  Jalen Purchase, who went 6.1 innings, was the losing pitcher of Game Two.
