Claflin Baseball Falls to Clark Atlanta in Final Game of SIAC Series

Orangeburg, S.C.-- The Claflin University baseball team fell to Clark Atlanta (CAU), 9-7, in the final game of a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) three-game series.  With the loss, the Panthers fall to 15-14 overall and 8-6 in the SIAC.  The win gives CAU an 8-18 overall record and 6-9 record in the SIAC.
 
CAU got on the scoreboard first, putting up two runs off three hits in the top of the third to take a 0-2 advantage.  Claflin cut the deficit to one, 1-2, as Thomas Clay scored off a dropped fly ball by CAU's second baseman in the bottom half of the inning.  The Panthers continued to stay aggressive as they scored two runs off three hits in the bottom of the fourth to take its first lead of the game, 3-2.  The lead was short-lived however as CAU put up three runs off four hits and one Claflin error in the top of the fifth to take a 3-5 lead and never looked back.  The CAU Panthers scored an additional run in the top of the sixth to stretch their lead to three, 3-6.  Claflin continued to fight, putting put up two runs in the eighth and two in the ninth to pull within two, 7-9, but could not get any closer thus falling by the two-run margin and giving CAU the 2-1 series win.
 
Darius Boykins, who pitched seven-of-nine innings, was the losing pitcher in the contest.  Clark Atlanta was led by Devin Franklin on the mound.
 
Claflin will host Morris College tomorrow, Tuesday, Apr. 1 in a non-conference matchup.  First pitch for tomorrow's game is set for 7 p.m. at Historic Mirmow Field in Orangeburg.
