Claflin Falls to Albany State in SIAC Baseball Doubleheader

Orangeburg, S.C.—The Claflin University baseball team dropped a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) doubleheader to Albany State, falling 3-4 (9 Innings) and 3-6.  With the loss the Panthers drop to 5-9 overall and 2-3 in the SIAC.

Claflin and Albany State battled from start to finish in the first game of the doubleheader.  Both teams put up one run in the first but then the offense went stagnant.  Neither team would score over the next three innings.  Albany State broke the scoring drought putting up one run in the fifth and one in the sixth to take the 1-3 lead heading into the middle of the sixth.  The Panthers put up two runs off five hits in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 3-3.  After the teams went scoreless in the seventh, the game went into extra innings.  Despite placing runners on base in the eighth, neither team could get a runner across the plate.  The Golden Rams broke the tie in the top of the ninth as they put up one run off one hit with two Panthers errors to take a 3-4 lead.  Claflin could not get any offensive production in its half of the ninth, falling in Game One by the one run margin.

Albany State was very aggressive in Game Two.  The Golden Rams scored runs in three-of –seven innings with 12 hits in the contest.  Albany State put up two runs in the second and three in the fourth to jump out to the 5-0.  A homerun to right center  by Sixto Guerrero got Claflin one run on the board in the bottom of the fourth, but the Golden Rams put up an additional run in the top of the fifth to maintain the five run advantage.  The Panthers did manage to score two runs off two hits and three Golden Rams errors in the bottom of the seventh but could not get any closer, falling in Game Two by three, 3-6.

Anthony Ford and Dezmond Moore were the losing pitchers in Game One and Game Two, respectively.  Albany State was led on the mound by John Paul Bernard in Game One and Andrew Bacon picked up the win in Game Two.

The teams will meet in the final game of the series tomorrow, Sunday, March 9.  First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Historic Mirmow Field in Orangeburg.
