Claflin Sweeps Benedict in Final SIAC Series of the Season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 Columbia, S.C.--The Claflin University baseball team swept Benedict College, 3-0, in its final Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) weekend series of the 2014 season.  On Saturday (April 12) the Panthers defeated Benedict 16-2 and 5-3 in a doubleheader.  Claflin completed the conference series sweep with a 6-4 win on Sunday (April 13).  
 
In Game One of Saturday's doubleheader Claflin (23-16, 14-6 SIAC) scored five runs in the first, one in the second, six in the fifth and four in the seventh en route to its 16 runs.  Jalen Thompson had a good game at the plate as he went 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBI's.  Johnny Stevenson also scored three runs in the contest.  Jessie Minter scored two runs with three RBI's and Reginald Rodgers also crossed the plate twice in the win.  Anthony Ford picked up the win on the mound in Game One.
 
Game Two of the doubleheader was more competitive.  Claflin put up five runs off five hits with three Benedict errors.  The Tigers in turn put up three runs off eight hits and four Panther Errors.  Jabari Brown and Sixto Guerrero scored two runs each to lead Claflin in the win.  Thompson contributed one hit and two RBI's as the Panthers completed the doubleheader sweep to secure the series win.  Justin Vreeland picked up the win while Darius Boykins earned a save in the game.
 
The third game of the series was the most competitive of the weekend.  Claflin put the first run on the board, scoring one run in the top of the first.  After allowing Benedict to score one run in the bottom of the second, Claflin scored one run in the third, one in the fifth and one in the sixth to push its lead to three, 4-1.  The Tigers scored three runs off three hits in the bottom of the sixth to knot the game at 4-4.  The Panthers scored two runs in the top of the ninth and held Benedict scoreless in their half of the inning to capture the 6-4 win and series sweep.  Minter went 3-for-5 with three runs to pace Claflin in the win.  Boykins was the winning pitcher in the final game of the series.
 
Claflin University will host Edward Waters in their final game of the 2014 season, Wednesday, Apr. 16.  First pitch is set 2 p.m. at Historic Mirmow Field in Orangeburg, S.C.
