Claflin Panthers Hold Off Tuskegee in SIAC Men’s Basketball Contest

Orangeburg, S.C.—Patrell Rogers came off the bench to score 12 points, seven in the second half, as Claflin University knocked off Tuskegee University, 59-54, in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) game Saturday at the Tullis Arena.  The victory enabled the Panthers to improve to 7-9 overall and surpass the .500 mark in the league at 4-3.

Ryan McNeill-Moses led the Panthers in scoring with 14 points while Adolph Caldwell chipped in nine points in the victory.  McNeill-Moses also led the team in rebounds with five.

Tuskegee had three players to score in double-figures led by Vladmir Tilme with a game-high 18.  David Alexander scored 15 and Graham Oluntuji contributed 10 points in the loss.  Camden Foster scored nine points and pulled in a game-high six rebounds for the Golden Tigers who drops to 6-8 overall and 3-4 in the SIAC.

Tuskegee opened took a 6-1 lead by the 18:58 mark.  Claflin's offense quickly went to work, scoring the next five points to tie the game at 6-6 over the next two-minute span.  The contest was close throughout the remaining of the first half as there were four lead changes and six ties with neither team taking more than a three-point lead.  Tuskegee owned the one point lead, 28-27, at intermission.

"We're thankful for the win," said head coach Ricky Jackson. "We hope this win will carry over to our next game against Clark-Atlanta."  Jackson added, "We look at the season as four quarters, the non-conference games, the west division, the east division and the tournament. We've finished the first two and now turn our attention to our division."

The play of Rogers changed the complexion of the contest and aided the Panthers in winning back-to-back games for the third time this season. The sophomore guard slam home two consecutive dunks midway the second half.  The baskets provided Claflin the breathing room it needed to gain control of the game.  Rogers highlight reels gave the Panthers a 41-36 leads with 9:02 left.

"Rogers was an added sparkplug for us coming off the bench," said Jackson. "He came in and provided us with a big boost on both ends of the court. He has all the ability in the world to make plays like that all night for us.

Jackson continued, "Rogers's dunks came as the result of our defense. We stepped it up defensively by putting pressure on the basketball. We needed this kind of team effort in order to secure the win."

The Golden Tigers failed to connect on two three-point field goals as time expired en route to the five point loss.
Claflin returns to action next Thursday at home against Clark-Atlanta. Game time is set for approximately, 7:30 p.m. at the Tullis Arena.
