Claflin Men’s Basketball drops 77-71 Decision to Fayetteville State

Orangeburg, S.C. – The Claflin University Panthers fell to Fayetteville State 77-71 in a non-conference men's basketball at the Tullis Arena.  The loss dropped Claflin to 2-7 on the season.
 
The Panthers was led in scoring by guard Patrell Rogers with 19 points, including 10-for-12 from the free throw line.
 
Trevor Dantzler followed Rogers in double figures for Claflin with 14 points that consisted of a team-high four three-pointers. The Panthers had three players to finish with double figures as Adolph Caldwell added 12 points.  Elijah Bradley added nine points and pulled in a team-high six rebounds for the Panthers in the loss.
 
Fayetteville State, which improved to 5-4 for the season, was paced by Michael Tyson with game-highs 29 points and eight rebounds.  Joshua Dawson contributed 15 points.  William Tibbs rounded out the double-digit scoring for the Broncos with 10. 
 
Dantzler hit a three pointer just 30 seconds into the final stanza to tie the ball game at 37-all.  Two free-throws by Tyson just 15 seconds (19:13) later gave Fayetteville State the lead for good, 39-37.  The Panthers continued to battle over the next six-plus minutes to pulling within one, twice, but the inside play of the Broncos proved to be too strong. Fayetteville State enjoyed its biggest lead of 11, 70-59, with 2:09 remaining.  The Panthers had one last run remaining, scoring the last 12-of-19 points before falling by the six point margin.
 
Claflin came out strong in the first half, jumping ahead by four, 10-6, by the first media timeout (15:42).  The teams exchanged the lead over the next six minutes then Fayetteville State's offense took control of the ball game.  After a 15-15 tie at the 12:10 mark, the Broncos used a 14-5 run over a four-plus minute span to take the nine point lead, 29-20, with 7:50 remaining.  The Panthers stayed poised, going on a 10-0 run of their own to regain the one point advantage, 30-29 with just under four minutes remaining in the half.  Fayetteville State closed the first half on an 8-4 run for the four point, 37-34, lead at intermission.
 
Claflin will return action Dec. 19th, traveling to Gaffney, S.C. to battle Limestone College. The contest will be the Panthers last before the Christmas break.
