Claflin Close Six-Game Road Swing with a Loss to Central State University

Wilberforce, Ohio—The Claflin University men's basketball team finished its six-game road swing with a 63-57 loss to Central State University in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC).  With the loss the Panthers fall to 2-6 overall and 0-3 in the SIAC.
 
Patrell Rogers scored 12 of his team-high 17 points in the first half.  Adolph Caldwell also scored 17 points for Claflin.  Rogers and Austin Lawton pulled in eight rebounds each, while Brian Townsend scored eight points with eight rebounds in the loss.
 
Sterling Gilmore led three Central State scorers with 16 points.  Jeremy Brown scored 14 points and Hosie Smith, Jr. recorded a double-double with 13 points-10 rebounds as the Marauders picked up its first win of the season, improving to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in the SIAC.
 
Central State scored the first two points of the second half but Claflin's offense remained solid.  Adolph Caldwell scored seven straight points to push the Panthers lead back up to 10, 37-27, with 18:03 remaining in the game.  After a basket by Lawton that gave Claflin a 12 point lead, Central State's offense came back to life.  The Marauders used an 8-2 run to cut the lead to four, 41-37.  The Panthers used an 8-0 run of its own to push its lead back to 12, 49-37.  Central State kept chipping away, scoring 22 of the next 27 points to tie the game at 55-all with 1:34 remaining in the contest.  The Marauders closed the game on an 8-2 run en route to the six point victory.
 
Claflin opened the game with an 11-4 run and remained aggressive throughout the half.  The Panthers held the lead for 19:24 of 20 minutes and enjoyed its biggest lead of 15, 23-8, with just under 10 minute remaining in the half.  Central State strung together a 9-2 run over the next six minutes to cut the lead to eight, 25-17.  Patrell Rogers hit a layup with 3:50 remaining to stop the run and push the Panthers back up by 10, 27-17.  The teams exchanged runs over the final three-plus minutes with Claflin owning the five point, 32-27, half-time lead. 
 
Claflin will return home this Saturday, Dec. 12 when they host Fayetteville State in a 4 p.m. non-conference game.
