Rogers, Caldwell Leads Claflin Men’s Basketball in Win of Albany State

Orangeburg, S.C.--Patrell Rogers and Adolph Caldwell combined for 43 points to lead the Claflin University Panthers past the Golden Rams of Albany State, 79-54, in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) game Thursday at the Tullis Arena.  With the win, Claflin lifted its season record to 13-12 overall, but more importantly, 10-6 in the SIAC.
 
"This was a big win for us," Claflin Coach Ricky Jackson said. "The guys played hard and with a lot of intensity, especially in the second half."
 
Albany State dropped to 8-15 overall and 4-11 in league play.
 
Rogers led the Panthers with a game-high 26 points, three shy of his season-high 29 points which he had against Elizabeth City State.  Rogers also had four three-pointers and a perfect eight-for-eight from the free throw line.
 
Caldwell produced 17 points, including three baskets from behind the three-point line.
 
"Patrell and AJ [Caldwell] played well offensively for us," Jackson said. "Both are very talented guys who have the ability to score."
 
For the game, Claflin finished shooting 54 percent from the field and 83 percent (20 of 24) from the free throw line.
 
Albany State was led by Earl Farnum and Davetom Odom with 11 points each.
 
In the second half, it was the Rogers and Caldwell show. Rogers scored 17 points in the half, while Caldwell added 10.
 
Rogers provided the Panthers with the distance needed, scoring 10 points in a 12-2 run to start the final half.
 
Claflin was never threatened. The Panthers built a 20-point lead at 61-41 on Rogers' three-pointer with less than eight minutes left.
 
The Panthers got off to a faststart, scoring the game's first eight points over a three-minute span.
The lead remained eight points until Odom drilled a three-pointer for Albany State. The basket cut Claflin's lead to 18-14 with 11:19 left in the period.
 
Claflin manage take a 10 points lead on two separate occasions, the last being 33-23 with less two minutes left.
 
Albany State responded by scoring five-of-the-last six points to trail 34-28 at the half.
Claflin will host Fort Valley State in a key SIAC contest Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at the Tullis Arena.  It will be Youth Day in Tullis Arena.
 
Game Notes: The Panthers shot a sizzling 61 percent from the field as compared to 39 for the Golden Rams.
