Claflin Baseball Falls to Lander in Extra Innings

Orangeburg, S.C.—The Claflin University baseball dropped a non-conference decision to Lander, falling, 2-6, in extra innings at Historic Mirmow Field in Orangeburg.  With the loss, the Panthers fall to 1-2 on the short season.
 
Lander (2-2) got on the scoreboard first, scoring two runs off two hits in the top of the first.  Both teams offense went stagnant over the next seven innings; with the Bearcats taking the 2-0 lead into the eighth.  After trailing for seven innings, Claflin scored two runs off three hits in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game at 2-2.  Neither team would score in the ninth inning, thus forcing extra innings.
 
Lander's offense was solid in the top of the tenth.  The Bearcats put up four runs off four hits, to take the 2-6 advantage heading to bottom of the inning.  The Panthers placed two-of-four batters on base in its half of the tenth but could not capitalize, falling by the four-run margin.
 
Despite giving up the early two runs, Wendell Ferguson pitched a solid six innings, allowing just three hits with nine strikeouts for Claflin.  Rashad Hilton had two hits while Johnny Stevenson and Rashad Hilton scored the runs for the Panthers.  Aaron Perry was the losing pitcher of record.
 
Lander was led by Zach Daly with one run, three hits and three RBI's.  Cameron Tekker picked up the win for Lander.
 
Claflin will host Florida Southern in a three-game series this Friday-Saturday, Feb. 6-7.  Friday's single-game is set for a 5 p.m. first pitch while Saturday's double-header is set for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
