Claflin Splits Non-conference Baseball Doubleheader with St. Augustine’s

Orangeburg, S.C. – The Claflin University baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with St. Augustine's University, dropping the first game 9-3 and winning the second 3-2 in extra innings.

Jesse Minter paced Claflin in Game Two with one run off three hits.  Johnny Stevenson and Reginald Rogers also scored runs in Game Two.  Minter, Leverette and Harold Smith, each scored runs for the Panthers in Game One.

On the mound, Smith picked up with Game Two win while Anthony Ford was the loser of Game One.

Claflin broke the 1-1 tie in the bottom of the third as Reginald Rogers scored on a passed ball by St. Augustine's catcher.  The Falcon's tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth.  Neither team scored over the final three-innings of sending the game into extra innings.  After both teams went scoreless in the eight, Jesse Minter singled up the middle and advanced to second off a ground out to the pitcher by Wendell Ferguson in the bottom of the ninth inning.  With one on and two outs, McKinley Leverette hit the game-winning single to centerfield to score Minter and give the Panthers the one-point victory in extra innings.

In Game One Claflin took a 3-2 lead by the bottom of the fourth.  St. Augustine's tied the game at 3-all in the top of the sixth.  The Falcons put up six additional runs in the top of the seventh while holding the Panthers scoreless over the last three innings en route to the six run Game One victory.

Claflin will travel to Atlanta, Ga. this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, March 14-15, to face Clark Atlanta in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) three-game series.
