Claflin Cruise Past Benedict in Opening Game of Conference Softball Series

Orangeburg, S.C.—The Claflin University softball team cruised by Benedict, 10-5, in the opening game of a three-game Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) weekend series.  With the win, the Lady Panthers improves to 18-14 overall and 8-9 in the SIAC.  Benedict drops to 11-24 overall and 6-10 in the SIAC.

Elexcia Simmons hit a two run homer in the bottom of the second to get Claflin got on the scoreboard first.  Neither team scored over the next two innings then Benedict bats came to life.   The Lady Tigers put up four runs off two hits and two Lady Panthers errors to take a two run lead, 2-4.  Benedict's lead would be short-lived as Claflin put up eight runs off six hits, including a three run RBI by Nyesha Arnold in its half of the fifth to regain the lead, 10-4.  The Tigers put up one addition run in the bottom of the seventh but could not score anymore, thus falling by the five run margin.

Arnold led the Lady Panthers going 3-for-3 with two hit, two runs and three RBI's.  Simmons went 2-for-4 with three RBI's on the day.  Erin Lipps, who played in her first game since the opening game due to injury, went a complete game to pick up the win.

Kelsey Green went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI to lead Benedict.  Kendall James went three innings giving up eight runs to pick up the loss.

The teams will meet in the doubleheader of the three-game series tomorrow, Saturday, Apr. 18.  First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at Adden Street Park.  The Lady Panthers will honor its senior members in a pre-game ceremony at approximately 1:40 p.m.
